Indian Army Accelerates 6G, Quantum, AI and Cloud Technology Push

The Indian Army is stepping up its technology modernisation drive with a strong focus on 6G communications, quantum technology, artificial intelligence (AI), cloud computing and advanced networking. The initiative is part of the Army’s broader effort to build a more connected and data-driven force capable of responding faster in increasingly complex battlefields.

The Army has identified more than 300 capability-development projects, covering a range of emerging technologies and operational requirements. The push comes as the force places greater emphasis on networking and data-centricity, with advanced digital technologies expected to play a larger role in future military operations.

Among the key areas of interest is 6G technology, which could eventually provide faster and more resilient communications for military networks. Advanced connectivity could help integrate sensors, command systems, unmanned platforms and other battlefield assets, allowing information to move more rapidly between different elements of the force.

Artificial intelligence is another major component of the Army’s technology transition. AI-based systems can assist with processing large volumes of battlefield information, intelligence analysis, surveillance and decision-support functions. The objective is to help commanders obtain relevant information more quickly and improve situational awareness.

The Army is also exploring quantum technologies, which have potential applications in secure communications, sensing, navigation and high-performance computing. India’s wider National Quantum Mission is aimed at developing indigenous capabilities in quantum computing, communication, sensing and related technologies, creating an ecosystem that could support future defence applications.

Cloud computing and secure digital infrastructure are similarly becoming increasingly important. Modern military operations generate enormous amounts of data from surveillance systems, sensors, communication networks and other sources. Cloud-based systems can provide scalable infrastructure for storing, processing and sharing this information across authorised military networks.

The Army’s technology development programme also involves collaboration with Indian academic and research institutions, supporting efforts to develop indigenous solutions for emerging operational requirements. Such partnerships are intended to strengthen domestic defence innovation while reducing reliance on foreign technologies.

The technology push reflects a wider transformation in the nature of warfare, where connectivity, real-time information and rapid decision-making can be as important as conventional combat platforms. Integrating AI, quantum technologies, advanced communications and cloud infrastructure with existing military systems could enable the Army to operate as a more interconnected force.

With hundreds of capability projects under development, the Indian Army’s technology modernisation programme is expected to remain a major focus as India works towards building a future-ready, networked and technologically advanced military force.
