PM Modi, JD Vance Discuss Strengthening India-US Strategic Partnership

Prime Minister Narendra Modi and U.S. Vice President JD Vance held a telephone conversation on August 8, 2026, during which they discussed ways to further strengthen the India-U.S. Comprehensive Global Strategic Partnership.

The conversation covered several areas of growing importance to both countries, including defence cooperation, trade, critical and emerging technologies, energy security and critical minerals. The discussion reflects the expanding scope of bilateral ties as India and the United States seek to deepen cooperation across strategic and economic sectors.

Defence remains an important pillar of the India-U.S. relationship, with both countries continuing to build closer cooperation in areas involving military capabilities, technology and strategic security. The focus on critical and emerging technologies during the latest conversation also underlines the growing importance of advanced technological cooperation to the bilateral partnership.

Energy security and critical minerals have also become increasingly significant in the strategic relationship. Reliable access to critical resources and resilient supply chains is important for advanced manufacturing, clean-energy technologies and defence-related industries. Greater cooperation in these areas could therefore contribute to the long-term economic and strategic resilience of both countries.

According to the Prime Minister’s Office, Modi and Vance also exchanged views on regional and global developments of mutual interest. Their latest interaction comes amid continued high-level engagement between New Delhi and Washington on issues affecting regional stability and the wider international order.

Prime Minister Modi later said that the two sides discussed ways to further deepen the India-U.S. Comprehensive Global Strategic Partnership across key areas. He also congratulated Vice President Vance and Second Lady Usha Vance on the birth of their son.

The latest conversation highlights the continued importance both countries attach to their strategic partnership. With defence, technology, energy and critical mineral cooperation becoming increasingly interconnected with national security and economic priorities, India and the United States are expected to maintain close engagement across these areas.

The Modi-Vance discussion therefore represents another step in efforts by New Delhi and Washington to expand their strategic cooperation while responding to changing geopolitical, technological and economic challenges.
