RCI Begins PRAHAR Launcher Modernisation Programme to Strengthen PRALAY Missile Operations

India’s efforts to enhance its precision strike capabilities have received a major boost as the Research Centre Imarat (RCI), a premier laboratory under the Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO), has initiated a programme to upgrade the existing 8×8 PRAHAR launcher platform for improved support to PRALAY missile operations.

The RFP issued by RCI seeks an Indian industry partner for the modification, refurbishment, and integration of advanced communication systems into the mobile launcher platform. The upgrade aims to improve operational coordination, secure data exchange, and battlefield connectivity between missile units and command networks.

The upgraded launcher system will be equipped with modern communication capabilities, including satellite-based communication and line-of-sight connectivity, enabling faster transmission of operational data and improved command-and-control functions during critical missions.

The PRAHAR launcher platform was originally developed as a highly mobile missile launch system capable of rapid deployment in operational areas. By integrating enhanced communication architecture, the upgraded platform is expected to provide greater flexibility and reliability for future tactical missile operations.

The development is closely linked with India’s PRALAY missile programme, a surface-to-surface tactical missile system designed for precision engagement of strategic targets. Improved launcher communication infrastructure will allow missile units to operate more effectively in a network-centric warfare environment.

According to the RFP, the selected agency will carry out system integration, refurbishment activities, testing, and validation of the upgraded launcher. The modified system will undergo evaluation to ensure compatibility with existing missile command networks and operational requirements.

The initiative reflects India’s growing focus on modernising existing defence platforms through indigenous upgrades rather than replacing them completely. Such programmes help improve military capability while reducing development timelines and costs.

The PRAHAR launcher upgrade also supports the government’s push towards self-reliance in defence manufacturing by encouraging participation from Indian defence companies in advanced military system development.

With modern communication systems becoming a crucial element of contemporary warfare, the enhanced PRAHAR launcher is expected to strengthen India’s tactical missile deployment capabilities and provide armed forces with a more responsive and connected strike platform.
