India’s First Privately Manufactured C-295 Aircraft Set for Rollout from Gujarat Facility
India is preparing to witness a historic milestone in its defence aviation sector as the country’s first privately manufactured military aircraft, the C-295 transport aircraft, is nearing rollout from the Tata-Airbus production facility in Vadodara, Gujarat. The achievement is being viewed as a major breakthrough for India’s growing aerospace manufacturing industry and a strong step toward defence self-reliance.
The aircraft is being produced under a partnership between Tata Advanced Systems and European aerospace giant Airbus. The project is part of the Indian Air Force’s programme to replace its ageing Avro transport aircraft fleet with modern multi-role transport planes capable of supporting tactical and logistical missions across diverse terrains.
Under the agreement signed with the Indian government, a total of 56 C-295 aircraft will be supplied to the Indian Air Force. While the first batch of aircraft is being delivered directly from Spain, the remaining aircraft are planned to be manufactured in India at the Vadodara facility. The production line represents one of the most significant private-sector defence manufacturing investments in the country.
The upcoming rollout highlights India’s rapidly improving capability in assembling and manufacturing advanced military platforms domestically. Industry experts believe the project will strengthen the country’s aerospace ecosystem by creating opportunities for local suppliers, MSMEs, and skilled workers involved in aircraft component production and system integration.
The C-295 is a modern tactical transport aircraft designed for multiple operational roles including troop transportation, cargo missions, medical evacuation, disaster relief operations, and special mission support. Its ability to operate from short and unprepared airstrips makes it particularly useful for missions in border regions and remote areas.
Defence analysts say the programme could become a turning point for India’s private defence sector, as it demonstrates the capability of Indian companies to participate in large-scale military aircraft production. The project is also expected to encourage future collaborations between global aerospace companies and Indian defence manufacturers.
The rollout of the first Made-in-India C-295 aircraft is expected to boost the government’s “Make in India” and “Aatmanirbhar Bharat” initiatives while strengthening the Indian Air Force’s transport fleet with advanced operational capabilities.
As India continues to focus on indigenous defence production, the C-295 programme is emerging as a symbol of the country’s ambition to become a major global hub for aerospace and military manufacturing.
