GMR Aero Technic to Maintain Indian Navy’s P-8I Fleet Under New Boeing Defence India Partnership
India’s defence aviation sector is set to gain stronger domestic maintenance capabilities after GMR Aero Technic entered into a new agreement with Boeing Defence India for servicing the Indian Navy’s P-8I maritime surveillance aircraft.
As part of the collaboration, heavy maintenance operations for the P-8I fleet will be carried out at GMR Aero Technic’s Hyderabad-based Maintenance, Repair and Overhaul (MRO) facility. The programme will focus on comprehensive inspection schedules, aircraft servicing, structural work, and technical upgrades required to maintain operational efficiency of the frontline naval aircraft.
The agreement marks an important milestone for India’s private aerospace industry, as GMR Aero Technic expands into military aircraft maintenance support. The move is expected to enhance local defence sustainment infrastructure while reducing dependence on overseas maintenance facilities.
The Boeing P-8I is among the Indian Navy’s most critical long-range maritime reconnaissance platforms. Equipped with advanced radar, anti-submarine warfare systems, surveillance equipment, and reconnaissance capabilities, the aircraft plays a major role in securing India’s maritime boundaries and monitoring activities across the Indian Ocean Region.
Defence industry observers believe the partnership could accelerate the development of India’s defence MRO ecosystem by bringing advanced military aircraft servicing capabilities into the private sector. The collaboration also aligns with the government’s ongoing efforts to strengthen indigenous aerospace support infrastructure under the “Aatmanirbhar Bharat” initiative.
Boeing Defence India has continued expanding its presence in India through defence partnerships, local manufacturing support, engineering services, and sustainment programmes. The latest agreement with GMR Aero Technic is expected to contribute to long-term readiness and lifecycle support for the Indian Navy’s P-8I fleet.
Hyderabad has steadily emerged as a major aerospace and defence hub in recent years, attracting investments from global aviation and defence companies. Industry experts say agreements like this could further boost India’s ambition of becoming a regional centre for defence aircraft maintenance and support services.
