Indian Air Force Issues RFI for Next-Generation Fighter Trainer Aircraft to Strengthen Future Combat Training

The Indian Air Force (IAF) has initiated the process to modernize its fighter pilot training by issuing a Request for Information (RFI) for a new generation of fighter trainer aircraft. The move reflects the IAF’s long-term strategy to prepare pilots for increasingly sophisticated combat platforms that are expected to join the fleet over the coming years. As India advances its military aviation capabilities with indigenous fighter programmes and evolving operational requirements, the need for a modern Lead-In Fighter Trainer (LIFT) has become more critical than ever.

The RFI is intended to gather technical and operational information from aircraft manufacturers before the IAF finalizes its procurement strategy. Rather than selecting a specific aircraft at this stage, the service aims to assess the latest technologies and available solutions capable of meeting its future training requirements. The new trainer aircraft will play a vital role in bridging the gap between basic jet training and operational conversion to frontline fighters.

Modern combat aircraft feature advanced avionics, digital cockpits, sensor fusion, electronic warfare systems, and network-centric capabilities that require extensive pilot preparation. A dedicated fighter trainer equipped with similar technologies allows trainee pilots to develop operational skills in a controlled environment before transitioning to frontline aircraft. This approach improves combat readiness while reducing the overall cost and risk associated with training on expensive operational fighters.

According to the RFI, the Indian Air Force is looking for an advanced trainer capable of replicating the handling characteristics and mission systems found in modern fighter aircraft. Expected capabilities include a fully digital glass cockpit, embedded mission simulation, advanced navigation and communication systems, realistic air combat training features, and compatibility with future operational concepts. High reliability, lower maintenance requirements, and cost-effective operations are also expected to be important evaluation factors.

The requirement comes at a time when the IAF is preparing for the induction of several advanced combat platforms, including the LCA Tejas Mk1A, the upcoming Tejas Mk2, and India’s fifth-generation Advanced Medium Combat Aircraft (AMCA). These aircraft will introduce significantly more advanced technologies than previous generations, making high-quality lead-in fighter training essential for maintaining operational effectiveness.

The programme is also expected to support India’s defence manufacturing ecosystem. Both domestic and international aerospace companies are likely to respond to the RFI, providing the IAF with multiple options for evaluation. With India’s continued emphasis on self-reliance in defence production, indigenous participation is expected to play a significant role if the programme moves forward under the Make in India initiative.

By launching the RFI, the Indian Air Force is taking an important first step toward building a future-ready pilot training infrastructure that matches the capabilities of its next-generation combat fleet. A modern fighter trainer will not only improve pilot proficiency but also ensure smoother transitions to frontline aircraft, ultimately strengthening the IAF’s long-term operational readiness and air combat capability.
