India Exports Akash Missile Systems to Armenia, Marking Major Boost for Defence Exports

India has achieved another milestone in its defence export journey with the export of its indigenous Akash surface-to-air missile (SAM) system to Armenia. The delivery underscores India’s growing reputation as a reliable supplier of advanced military equipment and reflects the country’s broader ambition of becoming a major global defence exporter.

Armenia became the first overseas customer for the Akash missile system after signing a defence agreement with India. The latest shipment is part of the ongoing execution of that contract and further strengthens strategic defence cooperation between the two countries. The Akash system is designed to provide robust air defence against fighter aircraft, helicopters, cruise missiles and unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs), making it one of India’s flagship indigenous weapon systems.

Developed by the Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) and produced by Bharat Dynamics Limited (BDL) along with other Indian defence industry partners, the Akash missile system has been in service with both the Indian Army and the Indian Air Force for several years. Its successful operational deployment and continued upgrades have significantly improved its export appeal.

The export is also viewed as an important achievement for the Government’s ‘Aatmanirbhar Bharat’ and ‘Make in India’ initiatives. Over the past few years, India has expanded its defence exports to multiple countries by offering indigenous platforms ranging from missile systems and artillery to radars and patrol vessels. Armenia has emerged as one of India’s key defence partners in the Eurasian region, procuring several Indian-made military systems in recent years.

Beyond the Akash system, defence cooperation between India and Armenia has expanded to include Pinaka multi-barrel rocket launchers, Swathi Weapon Locating Radars, artillery systems and other defence equipment. The growing partnership reflects Armenia’s efforts to diversify its defence procurement while providing Indian manufacturers with an opportunity to establish a stronger presence in the international arms market.

The successful export of the Akash missile system is expected to strengthen India’s credibility in the global defence market. With several countries expressing interest in Indian-made missile and air defence systems, New Delhi is likely to continue leveraging indigenous technologies to expand defence exports and enhance strategic partnerships worldwide.
