Bangladesh has urged India to ensure that its territory is not be used for political activities by former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, arguing that such actions could have an adverse impact on the relationship between the two neighbouring countries. The request was made through diplomatic channels during a high-level meeting in Dhaka as both sides discussed matters concerning bilateral cooperation.
The issue came up during a courtesy meeting between India’s High Commissioner to Bangladesh, Dinesh Trivedi, and Bangladesh’s Foreign Affairs Adviser Humaiun Kobir at the Prime Minister’s Office in Dhaka. While welcoming the continued engagement between the two nations, Kobir reportedly stressed that political statements originating from Indian territory should not be allowed if they have the potential to influence Bangladesh’s internal affairs.
According to Bangladeshi officials, the concern is linked to reports that Sheikh Hasina is expected to deliver a virtual address on August 5 from India. Dhaka believes that such public political engagements could generate unnecessary tensions and has sought India’s cooperation in preventing activities that may affect regional stability or bilateral understanding.
During the discussions, both representatives reaffirmed the importance of maintaining constructive relations built on mutual respect, trust, and shared interests. They also reviewed ongoing cooperation in areas including trade, connectivity, security, and people-to-people exchanges, while acknowledging that open diplomatic communication remains essential for addressing sensitive issues.
Sheikh Hasina has been residing in India since leaving Bangladesh following the political developments of 2024. The current Bangladeshi administration has continued to pursue legal proceedings against the former Prime Minister and has raised concerns over her political engagements from outside the country through diplomatic channels.
India has not issued an official public response to Bangladesh’s latest request. However, the development highlights the delicate balance both nations are seeking to maintain as they work to preserve strong bilateral ties while managing politically sensitive matters through dialogue.
