The United States has praised India’s growing achievements in human spaceflight, with US Ambassador to India Sergio Gor highlighting astronaut Shubhanshu Shukla’s journey to the International Space Station (ISS) as an important symbol of the expanding partnership between the two countries in space.
Gor met Shukla in Bengaluru and described the Indian astronaut’s ISS mission as an example of what closer India-US cooperation can achieve. Shukla, an Indian Air Force Group Captain, became the first Indian to travel to the ISS during the Axiom Mission 4 mission in 2025, marking a major milestone in India’s human spaceflight programme.
The US envoy’s remarks come as India and the United States are seeking to broaden cooperation beyond traditional space activities. Both countries are increasingly looking at joint opportunities involving human spaceflight, scientific research, advanced space technologies and future lunar exploration.
The growing relationship has gained further momentum with Washington expressing interest in having India participate in future lunar initiatives. Gor has said that the United States wants India to be a partner as it advances its plans to return humans to the Moon, signalling the increasingly strategic nature of bilateral cooperation in space.
Shukla’s ISS mission also provided Indian space officials and astronauts with valuable operational experience in human spaceflight. During his mission, he participated in scientific experiments and activities designed to contribute to India’s long-term human spaceflight ambitions.
For India, the experience is particularly significant as the country continues preparations for the Gaganyaan programme. The mission is expected to provide Indian astronauts and mission planners with additional knowledge in areas such as crew operations, life-support systems, scientific experimentation and human spaceflight procedures.
The latest comments from the US ambassador underline how India’s human spaceflight programme is becoming an important component of the broader strategic relationship between New Delhi and Washington. Cooperation in space is increasingly extending from scientific exchanges towards joint technology development and ambitious exploration goals.
