Senior CPI (Maoist) commander captured during a joint security operation, marking a major breakthrough in India’s anti-Naxal campaign.
In a significant success for India’s internal security operations, senior CPI (Maoist) leader Misir Besra, who carried a reward of ₹1 crore, has been arrested in Jharkhand. The operation was conducted jointly by state police and central security agencies following intelligence inputs, delivering a major setback to the Maoist insurgency.
The arrest took place in the Dhanbad district during a carefully planned operation. Officials said Besra was taken into custody along with two other Maoist operatives without any major exchange of fire. Security agencies believe the operation was the result of sustained intelligence gathering and close coordination among multiple law enforcement units.
Misir Besra has long been considered one of the most influential leaders within the banned Communist Party of India (Maoist). He was wanted in numerous cases related to extremist violence, attacks on security personnel, extortion, and recruitment activities across Jharkhand and neighbouring states. Various state governments had collectively announced a reward of ₹1 crore for information leading to his capture, making him one of the country’s most wanted Maoist commanders.
Authorities described the arrest as a major achievement in the ongoing campaign against Left-Wing Extremism. Officials believe Besra played a crucial role in coordinating Maoist operations, maintaining communication among regional units, and overseeing organisational activities in forested regions affected by insurgency.
Following the arrest, security agencies have launched an extensive interrogation to gather intelligence about the Maoist network, its leadership structure, logistics, funding channels, and future plans. Investigators expect the information obtained during questioning to support further operations against remaining insurgent groups.
Over the past few years, the Centre and affected state governments have intensified intelligence-led operations against Maoist strongholds. Improved coordination between central armed police forces and state police has resulted in the elimination or arrest of several senior insurgent leaders, significantly weakening the operational capabilities of the banned organisation.
Officials stated that security operations against Left-Wing Extremism will continue across vulnerable regions to ensure long-term peace, improve governance, and support development initiatives in previously affected areas. The arrest of Misir Besra is being viewed as another important milestone in India’s sustained effort to curb Maoist violence and restore stability in the region.
