Russia has welcomed India’s efforts to contribute to the search for a peaceful resolution to the ongoing Ukraine conflict, with the Kremlin saying that Moscow’s position broadly corresponds with New Delhi’s approach of pursuing dialogue and diplomacy. Kremlin spokesperson Dmitry Peskov said Russia is aware of India’s position on the Ukraine conflict and supports New Delhi’s willingness to play a constructive role in efforts aimed at ending the war.
Speaking during a virtual briefing from Moscow, Peskov said Russia wants the Ukraine conflict to be resolved through peaceful means and remains open to a diplomatic process. He also welcomed India’s readiness to contribute to peace efforts, while acknowledging the role of US President Donald Trump in seeking a possible resolution to the conflict.
Peskov’s remarks come as India continues to maintain contact with both Moscow and Kyiv while advocating dialogue and diplomacy as the way forward. External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar has also reiterated that India remains in communication with both sides and is prepared to assist in efforts that could help bring an end to the conflict.
The Kremlin’s latest comments assume added significance ahead of Russian President Vladimir Putin’s upcoming visit to India for the BRICS Summit in New Delhi. According to Peskov, Putin and Prime Minister Narendra Modi are scheduled to hold a bilateral meeting, where the Ukraine conflict and other international developments are expected to be discussed alongside the broader India-Russia bilateral agenda.
The upcoming Modi-Putin engagement is expected to provide another opportunity for the two leaders to exchange views on the evolving security situation, international affairs and the prospects for peace in Ukraine. Moscow has described the relationship between the two leaders as close and constructive, while India has continued to emphasise that dialogue and diplomacy are essential for resolving conflicts.
Russia’s endorsement of India’s peace efforts also highlights New Delhi’s growing diplomatic role in the Ukraine crisis. India has sought to maintain strategic relations with Russia while simultaneously engaging Ukraine and Western countries, positioning itself as a country that can maintain communication with different sides of the conflict.
While Moscow’s latest statement does not indicate an immediate breakthrough in the peace process, its public support for India’s involvement could create additional diplomatic space for New Delhi to contribute to future negotiations. The issue is likely to remain an important part of discussions between Modi and Putin as the two leaders meet in the coming days.
