IAF to Establish Indigenous Engine Support Hub for Tejas Under New GE Aerospace Deal
India has taken another decisive step toward boosting the combat readiness of its indigenous fighter fleet, as GE Aerospace and the Indian Air Force (IAF) formalised an agreement to create a dedicated engine support facility within the country for the LCA Tejas programme.
The upcoming facility will focus on maintenance, repair, and overhaul (MRO) of the F404-IN20 engines that power the Tejas Mk1 jets. By shifting critical engine support infrastructure to India, the IAF aims to reduce dependence on foreign repair channels and significantly improve fleet availability during operational deployments.
Under the agreement, the Indian Air Force will manage and operate the depot, while GE Aerospace will extend technical assistance, training modules, and specialised tooling required for engine servicing. The collaboration is expected to streamline logistics and ensure quicker turnaround for engine repairs.
The development comes at a time when the IAF is steadily inducting Tejas aircraft into its squadrons to replace ageing fighter platforms. Faster engine servicing and improved supply chain efficiency are likely to play a vital role in sustaining squadron strength and mission readiness.
The Tejas fighter jet, designed and manufactured by Hindustan Aeronautics Limited (HAL), represents India’s long-standing push for self-reliance in defence production. However, delays in engine servicing and overseas dependencies have occasionally posed operational challenges. The new engine depot is expected to mitigate these concerns by bringing core maintenance capabilities closer to home.
Strategically, the move also highlights the growing defence cooperation between India and the United States, especially in high-technology aerospace domains. Industry observers believe this partnership could pave the way for deeper collaboration in engine manufacturing and future fighter programmes.
Once operational, the facility is expected to provide long-term sustainment support for the Tejas fleet, strengthening India’s indigenous defence ecosystem while enhancing the IAF’s operational efficiency.
