India has strengthened its focus on quantum-secure communications with the unveiling of 14 indigenous quantum products developed by the Centre for Development of Telematics (C-DOT). The technologies are designed to protect sensitive communications and critical digital infrastructure against increasingly sophisticated cyber threats, including future attacks powered by quantum computing.
The new portfolio combines Quantum Key Distribution (QKD) and Post-Quantum Cryptography (PQC). QKD uses quantum principles to securely distribute encryption keys and can help detect attempts to intercept communications, while PQC relies on cryptographic algorithms designed to withstand attacks from powerful quantum computers.
Several products are specifically relevant to defence and strategic communications. C-DOT has developed quantum-secure encryption solutions including Q-VIKRAM and Q-PARAKRAM, aimed at protecting sensitive military and strategic information. The portfolio also includes Q-SETU, a quantum-safe network encryptor, and Q-MAHASETU, designed to provide high-speed security for Layer 2 and Layer 3 networks.
The organisation has also developed technologies for optical and enterprise networks, including Q-AMOGH, an optical encryption solution, and Q-DARSHAN, a quantum-safe video IP phone. Other products address wireless connectivity, access networks and quantum communication hardware.
The development is significant for India’s defence ecosystem as military operations increasingly depend on secure digital communications between command centres, deployed forces and various platforms. Indigenous quantum-safe technologies could help reduce dependence on foreign encryption systems while strengthening India’s technological security.
The initiative also supports India’s broader efforts under the National Quantum Mission, which aims to develop capabilities in quantum computing, communication, sensing and related technologies.
With quantum computing expected to challenge many existing encryption methods in the future, the development of indigenous QKD and PQC solutions gives India an opportunity to begin preparing its critical and strategic networks for the next generation of cybersecurity threats.
