The Indian Air Force (IAF) has taken a significant step towards strengthening the combat capabilities of its elite Garud Special Forces by issuing a Request for Information (RFI) for advanced .50 calibre sniper rifles. The requirement focuses on acquiring powerful 12.7x99mm (.50 BMG) sniper rifle systems along with associated accessories to enhance the long-range precision capabilities of Garud commandos.
The move is aimed at equipping the IAF’s special operations unit with a high-performance sniper platform capable of engaging targets at extended distances with greater accuracy and effectiveness. These rifles are expected to provide Garud personnel with enhanced operational flexibility during specialised missions, including protection of critical air installations, counter-terror operations, and high-value target engagements.
The .50 BMG calibre is considered one of the most powerful sniper rifle categories used by military forces worldwide. Such systems offer superior range, higher muzzle energy, and the ability to neutralise targets beyond the effective range of conventional sniper rifles. The inclusion of this capability would significantly improve the stand-off engagement capability of the Garud Special Forces.
Currently, Garud commandos operate various precision weapons, including sniper rifles used for specialised missions. However, the induction of a .50 calibre sniper system would mark an upgrade by providing the force with a weapon designed for extreme-range precision operations and challenging battlefield environments.
Through the RFI, the Indian Air Force is seeking details from potential manufacturers regarding technical specifications, weapon performance, accessories, maintenance requirements, and long-term support capabilities. The information gathered through this process will help the force evaluate available options before proceeding with the formal procurement process.
The acquisition is part of the IAF’s broader modernisation efforts to improve the operational readiness of the Garud Special Forces. With changing security scenarios and the increasing importance of precision-based warfare, advanced sniper systems are becoming a critical requirement for elite military units.
The Garud Special Forces, established in 2004, are responsible for specialised missions such as airbase protection, combat search and rescue, counter-terror operations, and other strategic assignments.
