Military Personnel Win 18 of India’s 39 Commonwealth Games Medals, Underscoring Armed Forces’ Sporting Excellence

India’s armed forces once again demonstrated that their excellence extends far beyond the battlefield, with military personnel securing 18 of the country’s 39 medals at the 2026 Commonwealth Games in Glasgow. The remarkable contribution means that nearly 46% of India’s total medal tally came from athletes serving in the Indian Armed Forces.

The Indian Army emerged as the biggest contributor, with its athletes winning 16 medals across multiple sporting disciplines. Personnel from the Indian Navy added two silver medals in weightlifting, further strengthening India’s overall performance at the Games.

India concluded its Glasgow campaign with 39 medals, including 13 gold, 17 silver and 9 bronze, finishing fourth in the overall standings. While boxing produced the highest number of medals for the country, military athletes featured prominently across disciplines, reflecting the Armed Forces’ sustained investment in sports training and athlete development.

The performance also highlights the role of defence institutions in nurturing elite sporting talent. Many athletes representing the Army and Navy balance rigorous military duties with high-performance training, benefiting from dedicated coaching facilities and competitive exposure provided by the services.

Military athletes have traditionally played a significant role in India’s success at major international sporting events, and the Glasgow Games further reinforced that legacy. Their achievements not only strengthened India’s medal tally but also showcased the discipline, resilience and commitment that define the country’s armed forces.

With India preparing to host the 2030 Commonwealth Games in Ahmedabad, the success of service athletes is expected to remain a key pillar of the nation’s sporting ambitions.
