In a significant policy decision aimed at enhancing women’s participation in maritime security, the Government of India has approved permanent entry for women in the Indian Coast Guard (ICG). The move is expected to open long-term career opportunities for aspiring women officers while supporting the government’s broader vision of greater inclusion across the armed forces.
The decision was announced by Defence Minister Rajnath Singh during the rollout of a series of personnel-related reforms for the Indian Coast Guard. With the introduction of permanent entry, eligible women candidates will now have the opportunity to build full-time careers in the force instead of being limited to shorter service tenures.
The new framework also brings fresh opportunities for women already serving in the Coast Guard. Officers currently serving under the Short Service Appointment (SSA) scheme will be eligible to apply for Permanent Appointment (PA), provided they meet the required service conditions and selection criteria. This is expected to improve career continuity and provide greater professional stability within the organisation.
The initiative is designed to strengthen the Indian Coast Guard’s human resource capabilities while ensuring equal opportunities for qualified women to contribute to maritime operations. The policy is expected to encourage more young women to pursue careers in coastal surveillance, search and rescue, environmental protection, anti-smuggling operations, and other critical missions carried out by the force.
Alongside the recruitment reform, the government has also revised the procedure for granting ex gratia financial assistance to the families of Coast Guard personnel who are declared missing during operational duties at sea. The updated process aims to reduce administrative delays and ensure that eligible families receive financial support more quickly during times of hardship.
The Indian Coast Guard continues to play a vital role in securing India’s maritime interests, protecting the nation’s coastline, and responding to emergencies across its vast maritime domain. Defence officials believe that expanding permanent entry for women will not only make the force more inclusive but also strengthen its operational readiness for future challenges.
