India Targets March 2027 for First Tejas Mk-1A Squadron Formation

India is aiming to establish its first operational squadron of the indigenous LCA Tejas Mk-1A fighter aircraft by March 2027, marking a significant milestone in the Indian Air Force’s ongoing modernisation programme. The move is expected to strengthen the IAF’s fighter fleet while reducing dependence on foreign combat aircraft.

The Tejas Mk-1A programme is being developed and manufactured by Hindustan Aeronautics Limited (HAL) for the Indian Air Force. The upgraded variant features improved avionics, advanced electronic warfare capabilities, an upgraded radar system, and enhanced operational performance compared with the earlier Tejas Mk-1 configuration.

The formation of the first Tejas Mk-1A squadron is closely linked to the availability of aircraft engines and completion of remaining integration activities. HAL has been working to overcome supply chain challenges, particularly related to GE F404 engine deliveries, which have affected production timelines.

The Indian Air Force considers the Tejas Mk-1A as a critical platform to maintain fighter strength amid the retirement of ageing aircraft and the requirement for modern indigenous combat jets. The aircraft will gradually replace older fighter fleets while supporting India’s objective of increasing self-reliance in defence aviation.

The Tejas Mk-1A is part of India’s broader Atmanirbhar Bharat initiative aimed at developing a strong domestic aerospace manufacturing ecosystem. The programme involves collaboration between government agencies, HAL, and Indian defence industries to enhance indigenous fighter aircraft production capabilities.

The induction of the first Tejas Mk-1A squadron will also provide valuable operational experience for future indigenous fighter programmes, including advanced combat aircraft projects planned for the coming decades.

With the March 2027 target approaching, successful aircraft deliveries and squadron formation will represent a major achievement for India’s domestic fighter aircraft development efforts.
