The Indian Air Force (IAF) has arrived in Australia to participate in Exercise Pitch Black 2026, the Royal Australian Air Force’s premier multinational air combat exercise. Scheduled from July 20 to August 7, the exercise brings together friendly air forces to strengthen operational coordination and enhance combat preparedness.
India’s deployment includes four Rafale fighter aircraft, two C-17 transport aircraft, and more than 120 Air Warriors. The contingent has reached Australia to take part in a wide range of training activities designed to improve interoperability and operational effectiveness in a multinational environment.
Exercise Pitch Black is held biennially by the Royal Australian Air Force and is regarded as one of the region’s most significant air warfare training events. It provides participating air forces with an opportunity to train under realistic operational conditions while sharing tactics, procedures and professional expertise.
During the exercise, the Indian Air Force will engage in complex flying missions, mission planning and coordinated air operations alongside partner air forces. The training aims to improve tactical skills, strengthen joint operational capabilities and enhance cooperation between participating militaries.
India’s participation reflects its continued focus on expanding defence engagement with friendly nations and improving readiness through multinational exercises. The deployment also reinforces the growing strategic and defence relationship between India and Australia, contributing to closer cooperation in the Indo-Pacific region.
