The Indian Navy has received another MH-60R Seahawk multi-role maritime helicopter from the United States, further enhancing its capability to monitor and protect India’s vast maritime interests. The latest induction is part of India’s ongoing procurement of 24 MH-60R helicopters, a deal aimed at replacing ageing naval helicopters and strengthening anti-submarine and anti-surface warfare operations.
Two more Seahawk helicopters are expected to arrive in the coming weeks, steadily expanding the Navy’s frontline aviation fleet. The induction comes at a time when India is placing greater emphasis on maritime security across the Indian Ocean Region, where naval activity and strategic competition continue to increase.
Manufactured by Lockheed Martin’s Sikorsky division, the MH-60R Seahawk is regarded as one of the most advanced naval helicopters in service today. It is designed to operate from destroyers, frigates and other frontline warships, enabling the Navy to conduct long-range surveillance, anti-submarine warfare (ASW), anti-surface warfare (ASuW), search and rescue, and special operations support from the sea.
The helicopter is equipped with cutting-edge mission systems, including advanced maritime radar, dipping sonar, sonobuoys, electro-optical sensors and secure communication equipment. These systems allow crews to detect, track and engage enemy submarines and surface vessels with greater speed and accuracy. The aircraft can also carry lightweight torpedoes and anti-ship missiles, making it a powerful force multiplier during naval operations.
Defence experts believe the growing MH-60R fleet will significantly improve the Indian Navy’s ability to protect aircraft carrier battle groups, escort high-value naval assets and conduct persistent surveillance in strategically important sea lanes. The helicopters will also play a key role in humanitarian assistance, disaster relief missions and long-range search-and-rescue operations.
The latest delivery also reflects the steady expansion of defence cooperation between India and the United States. Over the past decade, both countries have strengthened military ties through major defence acquisitions, joint exercises and technology partnerships, with the MH-60R programme emerging as one of the most important naval cooperation initiatives between the two nations.
As additional helicopters join the fleet, the Indian Navy is expected to further enhance its operational readiness and maritime reach. The complete induction of all 24 MH-60R Seahawks will provide India with a modern, network-enabled helicopter fleet capable of responding to evolving security challenges across the Indo-Pacific and reinforcing the country’s role as a leading maritime power in the region.
