US Ambassador to India Sergio Gor visited Darjeeling following an invitation from former Foreign Secretary and Rajya Sabha MP Harsh Vardhan Shringla, experiencing the hill town’s culture, heritage and scenic attractions. During the visit, Gor met Shringla and explored several prominent parts of Darjeeling, highlighting the warm people-to-people connection between India and the United States.
Shringla hosted the US envoy at his Darjeeling residence, where the two shared local delicacies, including Darjeeling momos, along with Castleton First Flush tea. The meeting provided an opportunity to discuss Darjeeling’s heritage and the region’s connection with India’s broader cultural landscape.
Gor also visited the historic Makaibari Tea Estate, where he experienced Darjeeling’s renowned tea tradition. The visit highlighted the importance of Darjeeling tea as one of the region’s best-known cultural and commercial identities.
During his stay, the US ambassador walked along Mall Road and interacted with local youth and students. He also took a ride on the historic Darjeeling Himalayan Railway, popularly known as the Toy Train, one of the hill town’s most recognisable attractions and a UNESCO World Heritage site.
Sharing his experience, Gor praised Darjeeling’s people, history, landscapes and food. He expressed his appreciation for the visit and indicated that he would return to the hill town, saying, “I promise I’ll be back.”
Shringla described the visit as an opportunity to showcase Darjeeling’s rich heritage, welcoming community and the aspirations of its younger generation to the US ambassador. The engagement also reflected the role of cultural and people-to-people exchanges in strengthening the wider relationship between India and the United States.
Gor’s Darjeeling visit was therefore not a defence-related engagement but primarily a cultural and diplomatic outreach visit, bringing together India-US friendship, local heritage and tourism. His interactions in the hill town offered a glimpse of the broader people-to-people dimension of India-US relations.
