Prime Minister Narendra Modi and External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar have expressed condolences following the death of Sheikh Ahmed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, the brother of Dubai Ruler and UAE Vice President Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum.
Sheikh Ahmed bin Rashid Al Maktoum died on September 21, 2026, at the age of 76. Following his death, the Court of Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum announced a 10-day official mourning period in Dubai, with flags flown at half-mast across the emirate.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi conveyed his condolences to the Royal Family and the people of Dubai, expressing grief over the passing of Sheikh Ahmed. Modi also acknowledged his contributions to public service and offered prayers for his soul.
External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar also expressed deep grief over the death and conveyed India’s sympathies to the Royal Family and people of Dubai. Jaishankar was in the United States at the time of his statement, according to reports.
Sheikh Ahmed was the fourth and youngest son of the late Dubai ruler Sheikh Rashid bin Saeed Al Maktoum. He held several prominent positions during his public life, including Deputy Chairman of Dubai Police and Public Security, Group Chairman of A.R.M. Holding and President of Al Wasl Sports Club.
The messages from India’s top leadership come against the backdrop of close India-UAE relations spanning diplomatic, economic, security and people-to-people ties. The Indian community also has a significant presence in the UAE, particularly in Dubai.
