NASA has invited the Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) to join its Moon Base programme, marking a significant new step in the expanding space partnership between India and the United States.
The invitation was extended during the ninth meeting of the India-US Civil Space Joint Working Group held at ISRO headquarters in Bengaluru on August 5 and 6. The meeting brought together senior officials from both countries to discuss ways of strengthening cooperation in civil space activities, scientific missions, commercial space opportunities and future exploration programmes.
The proposed collaboration comes under the broader framework of the Artemis Accords, which India signed in 2023. Through the agreement, India and the United States have been working to promote peaceful and transparent exploration of the Moon and other celestial bodies while encouraging international participation in future space missions.
NASA’s Moon Base initiative is focused on establishing a sustained human presence around the lunar South Pole. The region has attracted significant international interest because scientists believe water ice could exist inside permanently shadowed craters. Access to lunar resources could eventually support longer-duration missions and reduce the amount of material that has to be transported from Earth.
For ISRO, the invitation represents an opportunity to build on India’s growing record in lunar exploration. India’s Chandrayaan-3 mission achieved a historic soft landing near the lunar South Pole in August 2023, making India the first country to successfully land in the region. The mission significantly strengthened India’s position in international lunar exploration and demonstrated ISRO’s ability to carry out complex deep-space operations.
India and the United States have already expanded cooperation through several major space initiatives. The NASA-ISRO Synthetic Aperture Radar (NISAR) mission has brought the two agencies together on advanced Earth-observation technology, while India’s participation in the Axiom-4 mission has provided another important milestone in human spaceflight cooperation.
The latest discussions also covered future scientific missions, human spaceflight technologies and opportunities for greater cooperation between the two countries’ civil and commercial space sectors. The two sides are additionally working toward wider scientific data sharing and collaboration under existing bilateral frameworks.
ISRO’s possible participation in NASA’s Moon Base programme could therefore extend the relationship beyond individual missions and create opportunities for Indian scientists and engineers to contribute to a larger international lunar exploration effort. Areas of potential cooperation could include lunar science, robotics, spacecraft systems, communications, navigation and technologies required for sustained operations on the Moon.
The development comes as major space powers are increasingly moving toward long-term lunar exploration rather than short-duration missions. India’s growing capabilities, combined with its experience from the Chandrayaan programme and planned human spaceflight efforts, could make ISRO an important partner in future multinational lunar activities.
NASA’s invitation is consequently more than a symbolic gesture. It reflects the growing confidence in India’s space capabilities and could provide ISRO with a larger role in the next phase of international lunar exploration. If the cooperation progresses, India’s involvement in the Moon Base programme could become an important milestone in the country’s transition from individual lunar missions toward sustained participation in human and robotic exploration beyond Earth.
