Minister of State for Defence Sanjay Seth has reiterated that India’s ambition of becoming a developed nation by 2047 will depend significantly on strengthening its indigenous defence capabilities and building one of the world’s most capable air forces through self-reliance.
Speaking at an indigenisation-focused event organised for the aerospace and defence sector, Seth stressed that defence preparedness and technological independence are central pillars of the country’s long-term national development strategy. He said the government’s vision extends beyond economic growth and includes building a secure, technologically advanced and self-sufficient India.
The minister highlighted that India’s defence manufacturing ecosystem has expanded rapidly in recent years, with a growing number of domestic industries contributing to military production. He said the government’s focus on indigenous manufacturing, innovation and private sector participation has significantly strengthened the country’s defence industrial base while reducing dependence on imports.
Seth noted that initiatives promoting domestic production, innovation and technology partnerships have reduced dependence on imported military equipment while creating new opportunities for Indian companies to contribute to national security. The expanding industrial base is expected to support future requirements of the Indian Armed Forces while also strengthening India’s position in the global defence market.
Addressing the broader security environment, the minister said India remains committed to peace but possesses the capability and determination to respond decisively to threats against its sovereignty. He underlined that national security and economic development must progress together, with indigenous defence production serving as a key driver of both objectives.
The government has consistently linked its goal of making India a developed nation by 2047 with expanding domestic manufacturing, technological innovation and defence self-reliance. In the aerospace sector, increased participation from Indian industry is expected to support future fighter aircraft, transport platforms, advanced avionics, missile systems and other strategic programmes, reinforcing the country’s long-term military modernisation goals.
