In a major step towards modernising military logistics, the Indian Army has initiated plans to procure 2,715 logistic drones to strengthen supply operations in difficult and high-altitude border regions. The proposed acquisition is expected to significantly improve the movement of essential supplies to forward-deployed troops while reducing the dependence on traditional transportation methods in challenging terrain.
The procurement programme is designed to support soldiers stationed along India’s sensitive frontiers, including areas with rugged mountains, narrow valleys, and extreme weather conditions. These drones will be used to transport ammunition, food, medical supplies, communication equipment, and other mission-critical cargo to remote military posts where road access is limited or hazardous.
According to the proposed requirements, the Army intends to induct drones across multiple operational categories based on altitude and payload capacity. This approach will enable the force to deploy suitable platforms for diverse geographical conditions, ranging from lower-altitude sectors to some of the world’s highest operational military locations.
The planned fleet is expected to feature autonomous navigation systems, secure communication links, obstacle-avoidance technology, and the ability to operate during both day and night. The drones are also likely to incorporate advanced anti-jamming capabilities to maintain reliable operations in electronically contested environments.
Military officials believe that the introduction of a large fleet of logistic drones will reduce the exposure of soldiers and transport personnel to hostile environments. Conventional supply convoys often face delays due to snow, landslides, poor road infrastructure, or adverse weather. Drone-based logistics can shorten delivery times while ensuring uninterrupted support to troops deployed at isolated posts.
The procurement also aligns with India’s broader defence modernisation strategy, which increasingly focuses on unmanned technologies across land, air, and maritime domains. In recent years, the Indian Army has expanded the use of surveillance drones, swarm systems, and unmanned platforms for intelligence gathering and operational support. The addition of dedicated logistic drones represents another important milestone in this transformation.
The initiative is expected to provide fresh opportunities for India’s domestic drone industry. Under the government’s Aatmanirbhar Bharat and Make in India programmes, indigenous manufacturers are anticipated to play a significant role in developing and supplying these systems. Increased participation from Indian defence companies could strengthen domestic technological capabilities while reducing reliance on imported platforms.
Experts note that logistic drones have become increasingly valuable in modern military operations, particularly in high-altitude regions where rapid resupply can directly influence operational readiness. Their ability to deliver critical equipment without exposing personnel to unnecessary risks has made them an essential component of next-generation battlefield logistics.
Once the procurement process is completed, the Indian Army will possess one of the largest dedicated military logistic drone fleets in the region. The move is expected to enhance operational flexibility, improve supply chain resilience, and strengthen India’s preparedness for sustained deployments along its strategically important border areas.
