India-Brazil Defence Ties Gain Momentum As 41-Member Brazilian Army Delegation Visits India

India and Brazil are taking further steps to strengthen their defence partnership, with a 41-member delegation from the Brazilian Army Command and General Staff College visiting New Delhi and Agra as part of a Foreign Study Tour. The visit reflects growing military engagement between the two countries and provides an opportunity to deepen professional understanding between their armed forces.

The Indian Army announced the delegation’s visit on November 2, 2026. During the programme, Brazilian officers visited selected defence establishments and historically significant locations, gaining exposure to India’s military institutions, defence capabilities and cultural heritage.

The study tour focused on professional interaction, knowledge exchange and strengthening institutional relationships. Such engagements allow military officers to understand different approaches to defence management, leadership and military training while developing professional connections that can support future cooperation.

The latest visit comes amid broader efforts by New Delhi and Brasília to expand their strategic partnership. India and Brazil have maintained defence cooperation through institutional consultations, military exchanges and high-level engagements. Their partnership covers several areas, including defence technology, military training, maritime security and industrial collaboration.

The bilateral defence relationship received additional momentum following Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s visit to Brazil in July 2025. Discussions with Brazilian President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva highlighted the importance of expanding cooperation in defence and security, alongside other strategic sectors. Both countries expressed interest in strengthening defence industrial partnerships and increasing engagement between their respective military establishments.

Maritime cooperation has also become an important part of India-Brazil defence relations. Both countries participate in the India-Brazil-South Africa Maritime Exercise, known as IBSAMAR, which provides a platform for joint naval training and operational exchanges.

The ninth edition of IBSAMAR concluded at Simon’s Town in South Africa on October 20, 2026, following ten days of activities. The Indian Navy participated with INS Tarkash, while Brazil deployed BNS Barroso. The exercise included harbour and sea phases designed to improve interoperability, operational coordination and mutual understanding among the participating navies.

The trilateral exercise also demonstrated the importance India, Brazil and South Africa attach to maritime security and cooperation in maintaining stability across international waters.

Beyond joint military activities, India and Brazil have opportunities to expand cooperation in defence manufacturing, aerospace and advanced military technologies. Both countries possess established defence industrial capabilities and have shown interest in developing stronger international partnerships.

For India, closer engagement with Brazil strengthens its strategic presence in Latin America and creates opportunities for defence industry cooperation. For Brazil, continued interaction with India’s military institutions and defence sector provides an avenue for expanding bilateral engagement with a major Indo-Pacific partner.

The Brazilian Army delegation’s visit is another indication of the growing importance of military diplomacy in India-Brazil relations. While the study tour was primarily focused on professional exchanges, continued engagement between the two armed forces could provide a stronger foundation for future defence cooperation.
