India and Sri Lanka Strengthen Naval Ties Through Joint Diving Exercise in Colombo

India and Sri Lanka have further reinforced their maritime partnership through a specialised joint diving exercise conducted in Colombo, focusing on advanced underwater operations and improving coordination between the two navies.

The exercise brings together personnel from the Indian Navy and Sri Lanka Navy to train in complex deep-sea diving techniques, underwater inspection tasks, and coordinated maritime response operations. The initiative is aimed at enhancing operational readiness and strengthening cooperation in the Indian Ocean Region.

A key component of the training involves deep-water diving missions using advanced mixed-gas techniques, allowing divers to operate safely at greater depths. The teams also practiced underwater search procedures, inspection of submerged structures, and coordinated recovery operations under realistic conditions.

Officials stated that the exercise is designed to improve both technical diving skills and interoperability between the two naval forces, ensuring smoother coordination during real-life situations such as search and rescue missions, salvage work, and maritime emergency responses.

Beyond operational training, the exercise also included professional exchanges and team-building activities between the personnel of both navies, helping to strengthen mutual understanding and camaraderie.

The India–Sri Lanka naval engagement reflects the growing emphasis on maritime security cooperation in the region, especially in maintaining safe sea lanes and enhancing underwater domain awareness in the Indian Ocean.

Experts note that such exercises contribute significantly to regional stability by improving joint preparedness and reinforcing defence collaboration between neighbouring countries.

The ongoing cooperation between India and Sri Lanka continues to play an important role in strengthening maritime security architecture in the Indian Ocean Region.
