India’s indigenous defence manufacturing ecosystem has achieved another important milestone as Azad Engineering Limited announced the delivery of its first indigenous turbojet engine to the Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) and the Ministry of Defence. The achievement highlights the increasing role of Indian private industry in developing advanced propulsion technologies for strategic defence applications.
The turbojet engine has been designed under a DRDO programme and manufactured by Azad Engineering using advanced precision engineering and aerospace manufacturing capabilities. The successful delivery demonstrates the company’s ability to produce complex propulsion systems that meet the stringent quality and performance requirements of India’s defence sector.
The project is the result of close collaboration between Azad Engineering and DRDO’s Gas Turbine Research Establishment (GTRE), which has been working to strengthen India’s indigenous aero-engine ecosystem. Over the past few years, the company has expanded its manufacturing infrastructure, established specialised production lines and developed advanced assembly capabilities to support high-end defence engine programmes.
The delivery is expected to contribute to future indigenous missile and unmanned aerial platform programmes that require compact, reliable and efficient propulsion systems. Indigenous production of such engines will reduce dependence on imported technologies while improving the availability of critical defence equipment for the armed forces.
Azad Engineering has steadily expanded its presence in the aerospace and defence sector by supplying mission-critical components to leading global and domestic manufacturers. Delivering a complete turbojet engine represents a major step forward in the company’s manufacturing capabilities and reinforces India’s growing expertise in advanced propulsion technologies.
The latest achievement also aligns with the Government of India’s Aatmanirbhar Bharat initiative, which aims to strengthen domestic defence production through greater participation of private industry. As India continues to invest in indigenous weapons and aerospace programmes, collaborations between DRDO and Indian manufacturers are expected to play an increasingly important role in building a self-reliant defence industrial base.
