Indian Navy Chief Admiral Krishna Swaminathan held talks with Australian Fleet Commander Rear Admiral Anita Williams in Sydney on September 10, 2026, as part of his official visit to Australia and New Zealand. The engagement focused on strengthening cooperation and interoperability between the Indian Navy and the Royal Australian Navy amid growing maritime collaboration between the two countries.
During the meeting at HMAS Kuttabul in Sydney, the two naval leaders discussed the Royal Australian Navy’s evolving fleet capabilities and future inductions, along with opportunities to expand operational interaction between the two forces. The discussions underline the increasing importance of practical naval cooperation and interoperability as India and Australia work toward a more secure and stable Indo-Pacific maritime environment.
Admiral Swaminathan was also given a familiarisation tour of HMAS Kuttabul, providing an overview of the naval base’s fleet infrastructure and operational capabilities. Such professional exchanges provide opportunities for the two navies to better understand each other’s operational structures and capabilities while supporting closer maritime coordination.
The Sydney engagement forms part of Admiral Swaminathan’s broader official visit to Australia and New Zealand, which is aimed at further strengthening India’s bilateral maritime and defence cooperation with both countries. The Ministry of Defence said the Australia leg of the visit builds on the momentum generated by the Third India-Australia Annual Summit held in July 2026 and the Second India-Australia Defence Ministers’ Dialogue held in June 2026.
The two countries have continued to expand defence and security cooperation, particularly in maritime security and regional cooperation. The Indian Navy has identified operational interaction, interoperability, information sharing, training, professional exchanges and emerging maritime capabilities as important areas for deeper engagement with the Royal Australian Navy.
Following his Australia engagements, Admiral Swaminathan is also scheduled to engage with senior naval and defence leadership in New Zealand. The New Zealand leg is expected to focus on operational cooperation, training, information sharing and professional exchanges. It also comes against the backdrop of the recently concluded India-New Zealand Maritime Cooperation Arrangement and the elevation of bilateral relations to a Strategic Partnership during Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s visit to New Zealand in July 2026.
Admiral Swaminathan’s engagements in Australia and New Zealand reflect India’s continuing effort to build stronger maritime partnerships across the Indo-Pacific. Greater interoperability, operational exchanges and information sharing with partner navies are expected to contribute to regional maritime security and strengthen cooperation among like-minded countries.
