India Signals Strategic Shift in Missile Doctrine Amid Evolving Global Conflict Landscape

India is actively reassessing its conventional missile strategy in response to rapidly shifting global conflict dynamics, signaling a potential doctrinal recalibration aimed at strengthening deterrence and operational readiness.

Speaking at a national security forum in New Delhi, Defence Secretary Rajesh Kumar Singh underscored the need for adaptive military planning, citing recent geopolitical developments, particularly in West Asia and India’s immediate neighbourhood. He noted that evolving warfare patterns are challenging traditional assumptions surrounding missile deployment and usage.

The strategic rethink comes at a time when modern conflicts are increasingly characterised by precision strikes, multi-domain warfare, and rapid escalation scenarios. According to officials, India is evaluating how its missile capabilities-across short, medium, and long-range systems-can be better aligned with emerging operational realities.

A key focus area is the development of a multi-layered conventional missile architecture, enabling flexibility across diverse combat scenarios. This includes enhancing strike precision, survivability, and integration with air and naval platforms. The objective is to ensure credible deterrence while maintaining escalation control in high-risk environments.

Strategic experts indicate that lessons drawn from ongoing global conflicts are influencing India’s defence planning, particularly the increasing reliance on stand-off weapons and integrated missile defence systems. The shift also reflects a broader push towards indigenous capability development and reduced dependency on external suppliers.

Additionally, the government is expected to prioritise technological innovation and domestic manufacturing, aligning missile development programs with the broader “Atmanirbhar Bharat” vision in defence. Recent advancements in indigenous missile systems and testing milestones further reinforce India’s intent to build a robust, self-reliant defence ecosystem.
