Germany Offers Renewable Energy Partnership to India, Supports Atmanirbhar Bharat Push

Germany has expressed its willingness to strengthen renewable energy cooperation with India by supporting domestic manufacturing of solar panels and batteries. German Ambassador to India Jasper Wieck highlighted the importance of developing local production capabilities to reduce dependence on foreign suppliers and advance India’s Atmanirbhar Bharat initiative.

Speaking during the 20th anniversary of the Indo-German Energy Forum (IGEF) in New Delhi, Wieck said Germany is interested in working with Indian companies to expand manufacturing facilities for renewable energy technologies. He emphasised that India should develop its own industrial capabilities rather than replace dependence on conventional energy imports with dependence on imported clean energy equipment.

The German Ambassador also highlighted the importance of energy security amid uncertainties in global energy markets. Disruptions to important international shipping routes, including the Strait of Hormuz, have demonstrated the risks associated with dependence on imported fossil fuels. Expanding domestic renewable energy production could help India reduce these vulnerabilities and strengthen its long-term energy independence.

Solar energy, battery storage and green hydrogen are expected to remain important areas of cooperation between the two countries. Germany sees significant opportunities for Indian companies to participate in renewable energy manufacturing while benefiting from German technology, expertise and investment.

The Bharat Renewable Energy Summit and Expo 2026, held in New Delhi, has also provided a platform for Indian and international companies to explore partnerships in clean energy development and manufacturing.

India and Germany have maintained energy cooperation through the Indo-German Energy Forum since 2006. Their partnership covers renewable power, energy efficiency, battery storage and green hydrogen development. Both countries are also exploring opportunities to strengthen clean energy supply chains and support industrial decarbonisation.

The proposed cooperation could benefit India’s renewable energy sector by encouraging investment, supporting domestic manufacturing and creating new technology partnerships. It would also help India strengthen its position in the global clean energy industry.

For India, closer cooperation with Germany represents an opportunity to advance energy security, reduce import dependence and support the long-term objectives of Atmanirbhar Bharat.
