Nine Killed in Florida Learjet 60 Crash as Final Mayday Calls Reveal Crew’s Last Moments

A tragic aviation accident in the United States has claimed nine lives after a Bombardier Learjet 60 crashed in Florida’s Palm Beach County on November 1, 2026. The aircraft was travelling from Austin, Texas, to North Eleuthera in the Bahamas when it entered a rapid descent before crashing near a residential community in the Greenacres area.

The incident has drawn attention following the release of air traffic control (ATC) recordings that captured the crew’s final communications before impact. The recordings reveal that the pilots initially reported icing conditions and moderate turbulence during the flight. However, the situation quickly deteriorated, forcing the crew to declare an emergency as the aircraft began losing altitude at an alarming rate.

During the emergency, the pilot issued a Mayday call and reported a descent rate of approximately 10,000 feet per minute. The situation became increasingly critical as the reported descent rate rose to around 20,000 feet per minute. The crew also communicated difficulties with the aircraft’s flight condition while air traffic controllers attempted to provide assistance.

In the final exchanges, the pilot warned that the aircraft was descending towards the ground at an extremely high rate. One of the most distressing statements captured in the recording was, “We’re out of time,” reflecting the urgency of the situation. Flight-tracking information subsequently indicated that the aircraft’s vertical descent rate had briefly exceeded 32,000 feet per minute.

The Learjet crashed at approximately 12:50 p.m. local time near Military Trail in Palm Beach County. The impact triggered a massive explosion and fire, sending thick smoke into the surrounding area. Emergency services rushed to the location to control the fire, secure the crash site and assist local residents.

US Transportation Secretary Sean Duffy confirmed that all nine people aboard the aircraft had died. The accident also prompted precautionary evacuations in the surrounding residential area, with approximately 600 residents reportedly moved from a nearby community as emergency operations continued.

According to the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA), the aircraft had departed Austin-Bergstrom International Airport and was heading towards North Eleuthera Airport in the Bahamas. The Learjet 60 is a business aircraft manufactured by Canadian aerospace company Bombardier.

The National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB), with support from the FAA, has begun investigating the circumstances surrounding the crash. Investigators are expected to examine the aircraft wreckage, flight data, weather conditions and the final communications between the pilots and air traffic control.

Although the crew reported icing and turbulence before the accident, authorities have not established whether these conditions contributed to the crash. The investigation will determine what caused the aircraft’s sudden descent and whether technical or other operational factors were involved.

Bombardier is expected to cooperate with the investigation as authorities work to reconstruct the aircraft’s final moments. The findings will be important in understanding the sequence of events that led to the loss of nine lives in one of Florida’s tragic aviation incidents.
