Indian Army Raises First Baaz Drone Battalion in Punjab to Boost Drone Warfare Capabilities

The Indian Army has raised its first dedicated Baaz drone battalion in Punjab, strengthening its ability to conduct persistent aerial surveillance and respond rapidly to emerging threats along the western frontier. The move is part of the Army’s broader effort to expand the role of unmanned aerial systems in modern battlefield operations.

The newly established unit is positioned under the 11 Corps, also known as the Vajra Corps, based in the Jalandhar region. Its location gives the Army an enhanced drone capability in an operationally sensitive area facing Pakistan, where unmanned systems have become increasingly important for monitoring terrain, detecting movements and improving battlefield awareness.

The Baaz battalion is expected to function as an important aerial surveillance element, providing commanders with real-time information from the battlefield. The Indian Army has increasingly focused on integrating drones into tactical operations as unmanned platforms offer persistent observation while reducing the risks associated with conventional reconnaissance missions.

The formation of the Baaz battalion also reflects lessons from recent conflicts, particularly the growing use of drones for intelligence, surveillance, reconnaissance and precision attacks. Modern battlefields have demonstrated how relatively small unmanned systems can provide forces with rapid situational awareness and support targeting and operational decision-making.

The Army had earlier moved toward creating specialised Baaz drone units as part of its wider force-transformation plans. These formations are intended to build a more organised and specialised structure around the Army’s expanding drone capabilities rather than relying only on individual units operating unmanned platforms.

The latest development comes as India continues to strengthen its capabilities in the lower-altitude battlefield domain. Alongside conventional aviation and air-defence assets, drones are increasingly being treated as essential tools for surveillance, reconnaissance and battlefield coordination.

The establishment of the first Baaz battalion in Punjab could therefore serve as a model for expanding similar specialised drone formations in other operational sectors. As the Indian Army continues its technology-driven modernisation, dedicated unmanned units are likely to play a growing role in providing commanders with faster information and greater operational flexibility.

The move highlights a wider transformation in Indian military operations, where drones, artificial intelligence, electronic warfare and real-time battlefield data are becoming increasingly central to combat planning.
