India is advancing its indigenous air-launched weapon programme with the Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) and the Indian Air Force (IAF) preparing to conduct flight trials of the PGB-500 precision-guided bomb from the Su-30MKI fighter aircraft.
The trials are scheduled for September and October 2026 and are expected to initially focus on the bomb’s carriage and release characteristics. The testing will provide important technical data on how the weapon performs when integrated with one of the IAF’s key fighter platforms.
During the carriage trials, the PGB-500 will be assessed while mounted on the Su-30MKI. The evaluation is expected to examine aspects such as aerodynamic behaviour, aircraft handling and loads during flight. Subsequent release trials will focus on the weapon’s separation from the aircraft and its behaviour after release.
The PGB-500 forms part of India’s broader effort to develop and strengthen its indigenous inventory of precision-guided aerial weapons. A weapon in the 500-kg class could provide the IAF with an additional precision-strike option while supporting the country’s objective of reducing dependence on imported munitions.
The planned trials are also significant for the Su-30MKI, which forms a major component of the IAF’s fighter fleet. The aircraft has been integrated with several Indian-developed weapon systems, and the addition of another indigenous air-launched weapon could further expand its operational flexibility.
The development comes as India continues to strengthen its domestic guided-weapons capabilities. Indigenous programmes in this field are focused on improving the accuracy and effectiveness of air-launched munitions while building greater expertise in weapon design, integration and testing.
The upcoming PGB-500 trials will be an important stage in the weapon’s development. Data gathered during the carriage and release evaluations can help DRDO and the IAF assess the weapon’s integration with the Su-30MKI and identify areas requiring further refinement before subsequent testing.
For the IAF, the development of indigenous precision-guided bombs could offer greater flexibility in future strike missions while supporting India’s wider push for locally designed and manufactured defence equipment. The PGB-500 programme therefore represents another step towards strengthening the country’s indigenous air-launched precision-strike capabilities.
