Prime Minister Narendra Modi is expected to undertake an important diplomatic visit to Kyrgyzstan and Uzbekistan later this month as India intensifies its engagement with the strategically significant Central Asian region. The visit will combine participation in the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO) Summit in Bishkek with a separate bilateral visit to Tashkent, highlighting New Delhi’s growing focus on regional diplomacy and connectivity.
During the Kyrgyzstan leg of the tour, Prime Minister Modi is expected to attend the SCO Summit, where leaders of member states will discuss regional security, counter-terrorism, economic cooperation, connectivity, and emerging geopolitical challenges. The summit is also likely to provide opportunities for bilateral meetings with several world leaders on the sidelines.
Following the SCO Summit, the Prime Minister is scheduled to travel to Uzbekistan for an official bilateral visit. Discussions are expected to focus on expanding cooperation in trade, investment, defence, energy, digital technologies, education, and transport connectivity. Both countries have steadily strengthened their strategic partnership in recent years, with growing collaboration across political, economic, and security sectors.
India considers Central Asia a vital component of its extended neighbourhood policy due to the region’s geopolitical importance and its role in regional stability. Enhanced engagement with the five Central Asian republics also supports India’s broader objectives of improving connectivity, securing energy partnerships, and strengthening cooperation against terrorism and transnational security threats.
The visit is expected to reinforce India’s commitment to deeper engagement with Central Asia while expanding cooperation under both bilateral frameworks and multilateral platforms such as the SCO. Analysts believe the tour will further elevate India’s diplomatic presence in the region and contribute to long-term strategic partnerships with key Central Asian nations.
