Adani Defence, DRDO Partner to Develop Next-Generation AEW&C System for IAF

Adani Defence and DRDO have partnered to develop a next-generation Airborne Early Warning and Control (AEW&C) system for the Indian Air Force, marking a significant step in India’s push to indigenise advanced air defence radar capabilities.

The collaboration leverages DRDO’s expertise in radar and sensor technology with Adani Defence’s manufacturing and integration capabilities. This partnership aligns with India’s broader Make in India and Atmanirbhar Bharat objectives in defence production, reducing dependence on foreign suppliers for critical air power systems.

AEW&C systems are among the most complex platforms in modern air forces. They serve as the eyes and ears of the battle space, detecting, tracking, and coordinating air and maritime targets across vast geographical areas. The Indian Air Force currently operates Airborne Early Warning and Control (AEW&C) aircraft that provide airborne surveillance and battle management capabilities.

The next-generation system is expected to incorporate advanced radar processing, improved target detection range, enhanced multi-target tracking capability, and modern data-link architecture for seamless integration with the IAF’s fighter fleet and ground-based air defence networks. These capabilities are designed to strengthen situational awareness and support coordinated air operations over large operational areas.

The development of indigenous AEW&C capability addresses a critical operational requirement for India’s air power. Modern air forces regard such systems as force multipliers, essential for air superiority, maritime patrol, and combat air operations. The programme is expected to strengthen the Indian Air Force’s long-term surveillance and command-and-control capabilities while supporting future operational requirements.

Adani Defence has emerged as a significant player in India’s defence manufacturing ecosystem, with investments across missile systems, unmanned platforms, and aerospace components. DRDO’s track record in radar development includes indigenous air defence radar technologies and phased-array systems deployed across the Indian military.

The partnership underscores the Ministry of Defence’s strategy to foster collaboration between public sector research institutions and private industry to accelerate development timelines and reduce acquisition costs. Similar public-private models have been adopted for missile systems, fighter aircraft avionics, and naval platforms, with measurable improvements in project execution and indigenous content.
