Transformers and Rectifiers (India) Limited (TARIL) has made its entry into India’s nuclear power sector after securing an order to supply generator transformers for Nuclear Power Corporation of India Limited’s (NPCIL) Kaiga Units 5 and 6 project in Karnataka. The order was received from Megha Engineering and Infrastructures Limited (MEIL), which is associated with the execution of the project.
The development marks a significant expansion of TARIL’s business portfolio, taking its high-voltage transformer manufacturing capabilities into the nuclear power segment for the first time. According to the company’s latest corporate announcements, the order from MEIL was disclosed on 29 August 2026.
Kaiga Units 5 and 6 are being developed as two indigenous 700 MWe Pressurised Heavy Water Reactors (PHWRs). Together, the units are expected to add 1,400 MW of nuclear generation capacity at the Kaiga site. The generator transformers supplied for the project will support the electrical system responsible for evacuating power generated by the nuclear units and connecting it with the transmission network.
For TARIL, the order is strategically important because it opens a new market beyond its established transformer and reactor business. The company has indicated that it intends to leverage its experience in high-voltage transformer manufacturing to participate in India’s expanding nuclear energy and transmission infrastructure ecosystem.
TARIL Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer Satyen Mamtora said the company’s entry into the nuclear sector comes at an important time for India’s energy development. He highlighted the importance of strengthening indigenous capabilities and building a resilient and self-reliant energy ecosystem as the country advances toward its long-term development goals.
The Kaiga project also underlines the growing role of domestic engineering and manufacturing companies in supporting India’s strategic infrastructure programmes. With NPCIL leading the nuclear power development and MEIL involved in project execution, TARIL’s participation adds domestic transformer manufacturing capability to the electrical infrastructure of the upcoming reactor units.
The latest order is therefore more than a new business win for TARIL; it represents the company’s move into a highly specialised and strategically significant segment of India’s power sector. As nuclear capacity expansion progresses, the company’s presence in the sector could create opportunities for further participation in critical power equipment and transmission-related projects.
