Indian defence communication technology company Avantel Limited has secured a ₹117.88 crore contract from the Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO), Ministry of Defence, for the development, installation and commissioning of a Ground Segment Hub for voice and data communication.
The contract represents another significant order for Avantel as India continues to strengthen its indigenous defence communication infrastructure. The order value of ₹117.88 crore is inclusive of applicable taxes, according to the company’s regulatory disclosure.
Under the agreement, Avantel will be responsible for developing and commissioning the ground segment hub, which is intended to support reliable voice and data connectivity for defence communication requirements. Ground-based communication infrastructure plays an important role in maintaining dependable links between different elements of a defence network and supporting operational coordination.
The project is scheduled for execution by February 2029. The contract also includes a 36-month warranty period, providing continued support for the systems delivered under the programme.
The latest DRDO order further strengthens Avantel’s position in India’s growing defence electronics and communication sector. The Hyderabad-based company has expertise in areas including satellite communication, wireless communication, embedded systems, signal processing and related defence technologies.
The contract also comes as India places increasing emphasis on developing domestic capabilities for critical military communication systems. Indigenous communication infrastructure can support secure connectivity requirements while contributing to the broader objective of reducing dependence on overseas technology and strengthening the domestic defence industrial base.
For Avantel, the latest order provides additional visibility for its defence business through a project extending into 2029. The company has secured several defence-related orders in recent years, reflecting the expanding role of Indian private-sector companies in supplying specialised technologies and systems to the country’s defence ecosystem.
The development of a dedicated Ground Segment Hub for voice and data communication is expected to contribute to the reliability and resilience of defence communications. Such infrastructure is important for maintaining connectivity, command-and-control functions and information exchange across geographically distributed defence networks.
