India has taken another major step towards strengthening self-reliance in defence manufacturing with the notification of the sixth Positive Indigenisation List (PIL) comprising 405 strategically important defence items.
Notified by the Department of Defence Production, the latest list has an estimated business potential of ₹3,070 crore. It includes Line Replaceable Units, sub-systems, sub-assemblies, spares, components and raw materials that are currently important to India’s defence ecosystem.
Of the 405 items, 16 are associated with the Indian Coast Guard, while 389 relate to Defence Public Sector Undertakings (DPSUs). The list covers equipment and components used across several major defence platforms.
The items include components related to aircraft and helicopters such as the Advanced Light Helicopter (ALH), Light Utility Helicopter (LUH), Su-30MKI, Light Combat Aircraft and AL-31FP engine. Armoured platforms including the T-72, T-90 and BMP-II have also been covered.
The sixth PIL further includes equipment associated with warships, missile systems such as Konkurs-M, Invar and MRSAM, along with critical defence electronics including radars, sonars, fire-control systems and satellite communication systems.
Each item carries an indicative timeline for indigenisation. Once developed domestically, these products will be procured from Indian industry. The initiative will provide opportunities for domestic manufacturers, including MSMEs and start-ups, through Make procedures and in-house development routes.
The latest notification builds on India’s broader Aatmanirbhar Bharat and Make in India initiatives. The government is seeking to develop a stronger domestic defence supply chain while reducing dependence on imported components and systems.
The SRIJAN Defence Portal, launched in 2020, has also played an important role in facilitating defence indigenisation. More than 33,000 defence items had been offered for indigenisation through the portal by June 2026, with over 15,700 items successfully indigenised, according to the Ministry of Defence.
The sixth Positive Indigenisation List is expected to further expand opportunities for Indian defence manufacturers and strengthen the country’s indigenous defence production capabilities.
