Prime Minister Narendra Modi and United States President Donald Trump held a telephone conversation on September 30, 2026, during which the two leaders reviewed progress in bilateral cooperation and reaffirmed their commitment to advancing the India-US Comprehensive Global Strategic Partnership.
According to the Prime Minister’s Office, the discussion covered several key areas of mutual interest, including trade, defence, energy and critical technologies. The leaders agreed to maintain close engagement to further deepen cooperation between India and the United States.
The conversation also included an exchange of views on regional and international developments. Modi and Trump discussed ongoing efforts to promote global peace and security and agreed to remain in touch.
Following the conversation, Prime Minister Modi described the discussion as productive. He said the two leaders had reviewed bilateral cooperation in trade, defence, energy, critical technologies and other areas, while agreeing to continue close engagement to take the Comprehensive Global Strategic Partnership forward.
The latest conversation comes as India and the United States continue discussions on trade and broader economic ties. India’s Commerce and Industry Minister Piyush Goyal is visiting the United States from September 29 to October 5 for discussions related to the proposed India-US Bilateral Trade Agreement and an interim arrangement.
Defence remains an important component of the broader strategic relationship between the two countries. The latest discussion indicates that defence cooperation continues to be considered alongside trade, energy and critical technologies as India and the United States work to strengthen their long-term partnership.
The two leaders last met in person on the sidelines of the G7 Summit in Evian, France, in June 2026, where they reviewed progress in India-US cooperation across defence, strategic technologies, energy and trade.
The latest telephone conversation comes at a time when India-US relations are also being shaped by ongoing trade negotiations and differences related to US measures concerning countries purchasing Russian energy. Despite these issues, the two governments have continued engagement on economic and strategic matters.
The reaffirmation by Modi and Trump of their commitment to the Comprehensive Global Strategic Partnership underscores the continued importance of India-US cooperation across defence, technology, energy, trade and wider regional and international issues.
