Japanese Defence Minister Shinjiro Koizumi’s official visit to India has highlighted the expanding defence partnership between the two countries, with ceremonial engagements in New Delhi and Mumbai reflecting the growing importance of bilateral security cooperation.
In New Delhi, Koizumi inspected the ceremonial Guard of Honour at the Manekshaw Centre in the presence of Indian Defence Minister Rajnath Singh. The formal ceremony marked an important engagement during his visit and reflected the close diplomatic and defence relationship shared by India and Japan.
Following the ceremony, Koizumi visited the National War Memorial in the national capital. He laid a wreath and paid tribute to Indian soldiers who made the supreme sacrifice in service to the nation.
The Japanese Defence Minister had earlier travelled to Mumbai, where he visited the Indian Navy’s Western Naval Command. During the visit, he inspected a Guard of Honour and paid homage at the Gaurav Stambh at the Naval Dockyard.
Koizumi also visited the Indian Navy’s indigenous stealth destroyer INS Chennai. During his interaction with Indian naval leadership, he was briefed on the warship’s capabilities and the Indian Navy’s operational responsibilities in the region.
The engagements provided an opportunity for India and Japan to reinforce their growing cooperation in maritime security and defence. Both countries have been working to expand practical cooperation in areas such as defence equipment, technology, maritime security and defence-industry collaboration.
The strengthening of India-Japan defence ties also assumes greater significance amid the evolving security environment in the Indo-Pacific. Both nations share an interest in maintaining a free, open and rules-based regional order and have increased their coordination on security-related issues.
Japan’s updated framework for the transfer of defence equipment and technology has also opened possibilities for greater defence-industrial cooperation with India. The two countries are exploring ways to expand collaboration while supporting India’s growing focus on domestic defence manufacturing.
Koizumi’s visit comes amid continued high-level engagement between New Delhi and Tokyo and adds momentum to the broader strategic partnership. His meetings and ceremonial engagements in India underline the importance both countries attach to closer defence and security cooperation.
The visit is expected to contribute to further discussions on maritime security, defence technology and industrial collaboration, strengthening the foundation of the India-Japan strategic partnership in the Indo-Pacific.
