‘Hero of Humanity’: Israel to Honour Indian Pilot Smit Machchhar With Top Civilian Bravery Award

Indian pilot Captain Smit Machchhar is set to receive Israel’s Presidential Award for Civilian Heroism in recognition of his courage during a serious mid-air incident aboard Flydubai Flight FZ1073 on September 30, 2026. Israeli President Isaac Herzog has expressed gratitude for the captain’s actions and invited him to Jerusalem for the award ceremony once he has recovered from his injuries.

The flight was travelling from Dubai to Tel Aviv when the incident reportedly occurred inside the cockpit. According to reports, the aircraft’s co-pilot allegedly attacked Machchhar, leaving him seriously injured. Despite his injuries, the Indian captain managed to open the cockpit door, allowing passengers and crew members to intervene and overpower the co-pilot. The aircraft was diverted to Tabuk in Saudi Arabia, and the passengers subsequently reached Israel safely.

President Herzog praised Machchhar’s courage, determination and professional judgment under extreme pressure. In a letter dated October 4, the Israeli president expressed the country’s gratitude for the captain’s efforts to help bring the aircraft to safety. He also wished Machchhar a full and speedy recovery and invited him to visit Jerusalem when his health permits.

The announcement followed a ceremony at the President’s Residence in Jerusalem on October 8, where Herzog presented the Presidential Award for Civilian Heroism to six Israeli citizens who were aboard the same flight. The recipients were recognised for their actions during the emergency and their role in helping prevent a potentially catastrophic outcome. Herzog confirmed that Machchhar would receive the same honour after recovering from his injuries.

Israel’s Presidential Award for Civilian Heroism recognises individuals who demonstrate exceptional courage while risking their own lives to save others. The proposed recognition for Machchhar is notable because he is an Indian national being honoured for his actions during an international aviation emergency.

Herzog also highlighted the historic relationship between India and Israel in his letter, recalling the Indian soldiers who fought in the region more than a century ago. He said Machchhar’s bravery would become part of Israel’s history and further strengthen the connection between the two countries.

The incident has drawn international attention to the responsibilities and risks faced by aviation professionals during emergencies. Machchhar’s response, alongside the intervention of passengers and other crew members, helped create an opportunity to bring the situation under control and protect those aboard the aircraft.

The award is expected to be presented once Captain Machchhar has recovered sufficiently to travel to Jerusalem. The Israeli president’s announcement recognises the Indian pilot’s reported actions during the emergency and underscores the importance of courage, sound judgment and cooperation in protecting civilian lives.
