Delhi has been placed under heightened security ahead of the 80th Independence Day celebrations, with the Delhi Police displaying posters featuring photographs of 19 wanted terrorists at multiple locations across the national capital. The move forms part of an annual security exercise aimed at increasing public awareness and helping law-enforcement agencies identify and track individuals considered a threat to the city.
The wanted individuals are linked to terror networks including the Indian Mujahideen, Al-Qaeda and various Khalistani organisations. The posters have been displayed at prominent and crowded locations so that members of the public can recognise the individuals and share relevant information with the authorities.
Security agencies have simultaneously intensified surveillance across markets, railway stations, bus terminals, Delhi Metro stations, government buildings and other sensitive installations. The Red Fort, where the main Independence Day ceremony will take place on August 15, has been placed under a multi-layered security arrangement.
A large security contingent comprising Delhi Police and paramilitary personnel is expected to be deployed around the Independence Day venue. The security grid also includes extensive CCTV surveillance, facial-recognition-enabled cameras, anti-drone measures, snipers and specialised response teams.
Technology is playing an increasingly important role in the security operation. Delhi Police are using facial-recognition systems and the Abhigyan application to assist personnel in identifying suspicious or wanted individuals. The system can allow fingerprints to be checked against a large criminal database, strengthening the ability of officers to verify identities during heightened security operations.
The enhanced security measures come as authorities prepare for large public gatherings associated with Independence Day. Police are maintaining increased vigilance around transportation hubs and other locations where large numbers of people are expected to gather.
By displaying the photographs of the 19 wanted terrorists, authorities are also seeking greater public participation in the security effort. The initiative is intended to encourage citizens to remain alert and report suspicious activity or information that could assist investigators.
